Greg Graffin, “Don’t Be Afraid To Run” (mp3)
If punk is really just folk music, maaaan, then how come so many punks insist on getting back to roots-rock in their old age? On sabbatical from Bad Religion, Graffin whips out the acoustic guitar, ropes in the Weakerthans (who already know a thing or two about the career path from agit-speedpunks to roots-rockers), and blows . . . on a harmonica. To be fair, the result doesn’t suck as bad as Mike Ness’s country records. But that’s not saying much.Clipse, DJ Benzi, Diplo, et al., We Got the Remix (mixtape)
What started as an inside job — underground DJs hijack the a cappellas to the Clipse’s We Got It 4 Cheap mixtapes, plot remix coup — has become a semi-authorized sequel. Yes, Pharrell’s back — signing his first skater, hanging with Donatella — on the new “Mr. Me Too,” while the Re-Up Gang spits new freestyles over old Beasties. No dunce-capping and kazooing here: everyone steps their game up, from NYC party DJ Nick Catchdubs to Montreal maverick Ghislain Poirier.
Shit Robot, Large Room Full of People (mixtape)
Marcus Lambkin, a/k/a Shit Robot, has been running with the DFA’s James Murphy since their days spinning at the Planet Bar, and if all goes as planned he’ll be the next Juan McLean. While you’re waiting for a domestic pressing of his UK “Wrong Galaxy” 12-inch (visions of Carl Craig!), you can sample his exquisite taste on this album-length DJ mix recorded this past February in Germany.
