Casting Alert: Marky Wahlberg calling all meatheads (and their girlfriends)
IRISH MICKEY WARD V. ARTURO GATTI (2002)
"Hi, it's Mark Wahlberg. We're making the Irish Rocky. Can you get me every meathead within 20 miles of Lowell? ASAP? Oh, and I'm gonna need their girlfriends, too . . ."
At least that's how we imagine the conversation must've gone when someone decided to issue the following cattle call, which arrived minutes ago in our office. Make a note of it: the long-awaited, David O. Russel-directed biopic of troubled Lowell mauler Irish Mickey Ward (with Wahlberg in the title role and World's 8th Unsexiest Man CHRISTIAN BALE as his brother) is coming to town. Believe it or not, this picture has actually evolved into less of a Boston-circle-jerk than it used to be: at one point it was to have been Harvard alum Darin Aronofsky's follow-up to The Wrestler, and Wahlberg was gonna team with . . . Matt Damon.
Is it just a coincidence that this trickled out on the 7th anniversary of the first Ward/Gatti fight? If you have no idea what we're talking about, check out the final rounds, above.
