As we turn the corner from Labor Day to the two-month home stretch of the Boston City Council campaign, John "JC Penny" Connolly remains way ahead of the at-large pack when it comes to banking coin. But he did not top the field for August -- young Felix Arroyo beat him, with help from a roughly $11,000 fundraiser in Puerto Rico.
Below are some money numbers for each of the Big 5 candidates -- leaving aside William Dorcena and Sean Ryan, who will have to do it without big bucks. (Dorcena has $1445 entering September; Ryan has $441.)
One of the lines you'll see for each candidate is "Percent from Boston individuals." This is a figure I've calculated, from the campaign-finance disclosures, of what portion of the candidate's 2011 contributions came from individuals (not PACs) who gave a Boston address. These percentages should be taken with a grain of salt; some donors provide their work address, and others their home address, and that can make a significant difference. So don't put too much stock in that figure, but I think it's interesting anyway.
Felix Arroyo
Total raised in 2011: $80,061
Percent from Boston individuals: 53%
Raised in August: $34,199
Balance at end of August: $107,737
John Connolly
Total raised in 2011: $217,270
Percent from Boston individuals: 46%
Raised in August: $31,133
Balance at end of August: $236,434
(Note: I believe Connolly may have a small additional amount in a CD, but if so it's only a few thousand.)
Michael Flaherty
Total raised in 2011: $71,270
Percent from Boston individuals: 50%
Raised in August: $21,242
Balance at end of August: $30,870
Stephen Murphy
Total raised in 2011: $90,670
Percent from Boston individuals: 42%
Raised in August: $13,700
Balance at end of August: $49,170
(Note: Murphy's reports appear to be missing itemized listings for over $10,000 of contributions, which his campaign is looking into for me. Meanwhile, I've calculated the Boston % using only the itemized contributions.)
(Update: Murphy has had the missing items posted; adding them in, the overall percentage from Boston remains at 42%.)
Ayanna Pressley
Total raised in 2011: $85,631
Percent from Boston individuals: 59%
Raised in August: $23,652
Balance at end of August: $52,681
