What's on St. Fleur's mind
This week's Dorchester Reporter features a long piece on Marie St. Fleur, who might be the only local politican who's had a crappier 2006 than Tom Reilly. (There's also a reprinted letter from the state rep to her constituents.)
By the story's end, it's hard to know what to make of St. Fleur's
mindset. Sometimes she seems apologetic--e.g., "If we had just taken a
little more time, perhaps we would've had a chance to think some of
these things through." At other points, though, she
basically claims her financial missteps give her credibility as an
economic populist. ("I've had moments where I wondered, how does a kid
with no money make it in this business, and I think it's important that
we do... I can speak to the experiences of many people that others who
are in the seats cannot.")
The days of St. Fleur being mentioned as a possible successor to Boston mayor Tom Menino
may be gone for good. But whatever the future holds for the state rep,
she’d do well to stop wearing her fiscal woes as a badge of
honor. It’s been said before, but it bears repeating: plenty of people
who make a lot less than St. Fleur and her husband find a way to
pay their bills on time.
