Living Social is offering a heckuva deal: a $20 Amazon gift certificate for $10.
Of course, you'll have to spend another $5 to qualify for free shipping. And there's that whole thing about Amazon basically being the Death Star. But I have devised a way to use this coupon guilt-free: buy a book the rapacious monolith hasn't discounted.
Just as independent bookstores can't afford to discount books as heartily as Amazon, independent publishers can't afford to give Amazon the discount it demands from corporate publishers. Therefore, Amazon doesn't pass that savings along to its customers, and books from small publishers don't get a fair shake. How cool would it be if everyone who bought today's coupon turned around and bought a book from a small press?
Three small presses that came immediately to mind are Canarium Books, Rose Metal Press, and Ugly Duckling Presse. Happy shopping!
