[tonight @ magic room] Squall gets dirty with Mark Sultan (bring ur own BBQ)
My love for noisy post-punk duo The Human Tail has been well-documented -- no seriously, blast the 2010 Tape EP right now, it's fantastical -- so I'm pleased to see fine gent Robbie Lordi back in action with SQUALL, a just-as-noisy trio that's cleaned up the Human Tail's penchant for ferocity and hooked it up on Match.com with the sincerity of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. A few weeks ago on Accents we debuted the track "Black Marks," and tonight the gritty lads aurally bomb the Magic Room Gallery in Brighton before MARK SULTAN (aka BBQ) brings out the squad cars and summons the fire department over from (the other) Union Square. The SINBUSTERS are also on the bill, and I'll need a scouting report on them from anyone who shows up early.
The out-of-the-way, Allstonians-see-it-en-route-to-Target-in-Watertown den of colorful rock sin known as the Magic Room is a pretty swell space and though a haven for private parties, things have been opening up a bit to the general public. Most of the sound system was brought over from Avalon and Axis (RIP, cool Lansdowne Street), and there's enough lasers, lights, and projections to trip your face off without ingesting any du-rags.
Everyone raves about Sultan, and his recent War on Rock and Roll is a rad concept, but the Human Tail fanboy in me is just wicked stoked over the sounds of Squall. Sneak a listen, and marvel at how the Squall logo above features every letter in the band's name. Artful logos are a lost art.
