[sxsw phlipcam] Spoek Mathambo @ Fader Fort by Fiat
As the Saturday slate inside the Fader Fort by Fiat wound down, buzz was building over the super-secret surprise guest. Diddy? Kanye before his late-night power station show across the highway? Eminem & Dre? Turns out it was the guy from Bon Iver playing with his high school band, Deyarmond Edison (Diddy did introduce headliner Lil' B later on and hit the stage for a few tracks). Sing me to sleep, Justin.
But all was not lost. While I was waiting for the "surprise guest," I positioned myself near the stage as some rapper I'd never heard of was performing. Not a fan, at all, of dub or hip-hop or world beats, but I'm totes a sucker for anything Joy Division, and was unexpectedly introduced to South African Afro-futurist SPOEK MATHAMBO and his pretty impressive sample/spin/reboot/remix of "She's Lost Control."
What... the... fuck...? He's even got a little Ian Curtis dance! Traditionalists might cry foul, but I kinda dig it. Peep the Phlipcam sample of "Control," though I wish I shot more of it. Here's the full thing, too. Martin Hannett lives forever.
Added note: The more I listen to the album track, the more I love it. The best part of SXSW? Getting exposed to awesome new shit like this.
