If you'd asked us back in 1989, the year Metallica lost the first-ever metal Grammy to Jethro Tull -- we're not sure which we would've identified as the more unlikely event 20 years hence: a black president or Metallica getting into the rock n roll hall of fame.
Then again, if you told us that in the future, Metallica would be photographed wearing mandals while shopping at Armani, we'd have laughed and said something dismissive. Like, "Yeah, right. I bet you're gonna tell me that in the 21st century they'll have balloon-drops at Metallica shows, too."
Before we get to the video, we'll say this: the gig last weekend at the Garden [SLIDESHOW: Metallica at the Garden] was awful close to exactly what we remember from the post-Justice tours of the late-'80s, with a little less Master of Puppets and about five new songs that we absolutely didn't hate. Can't remember the last time we saw 'em play a full-length version of "Shortest Straw" (most of the Justice material got packaged into medleys, post-Black album). They played nothing from Load or Reload, which in our book is just good common sense. So no, we did not have a bad time. And yes, we're just jealous we didn't grab a balloon.
