Capitol Hill Shocker!: Reed Won't be SecDef

Senator Jack Reed issued his 12,343rd denial of interest in the Secretary of Defense post today. You've got to wonder when the national press corps will catch onto the trend. From Politico:

Sen. Jack Reed, a retired Army paratrooper who is on the short list of candidates to succeed Defense Secretary Robert Gates, said Tuesday he would not be the “one” President Barack Obama picks to lead the Pentagon.

In a short interview with POLITICO, Reed (D-R.I.) would not say whether he has had any discussions with administration officials about the job.

“I am working hard to be a good senator from Rhode Island, and that is my sole focus, and I hope to be able to focus on that for the reminder of my term,” said Reed, 61, a West Point graduate and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg News cited an administration source who said Reed was one of several leading candidates to replace Gates, who plans to retire this year after more than four years heading the Defense Department. Others include Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon Panetta, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, and Michele Flournoy, undersecretary of defense for policy.

When asked if he was interested in the defense job, Reed replied: “I think there are many worthy candidates and the president will find one, and I will not be that one.”
