Mr. Fussy rides again

At the end of his latest dispatch from the political trail--which includes a surprisingly sensitive exchange with troubled state senator Anthony Galluccio--Globe columnist Alex Beam reveals that he'll be back in "g" as of next week.

Readers of this blog will know that I had harsh words for Beam's recent column on Martha Coakley's, um, hotness. But that's not why I find myself cheering this move.

Whether you enjoy Beam's living/arts stuff or get annoyed by it--or both--he's a distinctive voice with an idiosyncratic range of interests. Dedicated political columnists are a dime a dozen; cultural columnists with Beam's mandate and M.O. are much rarer.

I called up Beam a few minutes ago to ask why he was going back to "g." He explained that--when he was approached two and a half months ago about covering the mayor's race, the governor's race (remember that?), and the US Senate tilt--the understanding was that he'd return to his old post after yesterday's Senate primaries.

"I'm just happy about the whole thing," Beam says. "I think it worked out well. But if I hung around, people would start to get bored with me making these kind of off-color, scabrous comments."

Beam's "off-color, scabrous comments" directed at pols are livelier than anything he has to say about the muffin recipes in Bedford or the latest Ben Franklin tome.

I don't cheer the move back to G; I rue it.
