The bands you should be listening to this year

SPIRIT KID | After gigs around town in 2009 as the Emeen Z Band, Spirit Kid crystallized early last year on the heels of both a sterling debut album and the selection of the jangly romper "You Lit Up for Me" to soundtrack the promotional videos for Showtime's Weeds. Now, Spirit Kid kick off the new year with a mini-tour supporting Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves (at the Middle East January 14) and the vinyl release of a double single, "Honestly/Wrong Kind of Money." From there, another EP and a possible single will drop before work begins on the sophomore record. And with Emeen Zarookian's mod, slick, '60s-soaked songwriting talents, smart song placement could help the band break nationally. "Looks like we'll be having songs in an indie film or two, so that's always cool," he says. Right on.
