Out: A Dark Horse at T.T. the Bear’s

GOOD TO BE BACK The cast on Night Fruit singer Amanda Dellevigne’s left foot didn’t slow her down.

"I made the right decision," says Night Fruit vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Amanda Dellevigne, referring to her 2011 relocation back to Boston, while scanning the crowd at T.T. the Bear's Place after playing a packed Tuesday-night show with fellow local favorites You Can Be A Wesley and Slowdim.

As with many Boston projects, Night Fruit have had an on-and-off relationship with the city and its surrounding neighborhoods and scenes, leaving and returning a number of times since the dream-pop trio's inception sometime in 2010. Most recently, wanderlust drove Dellevigne to spend last spring touring with Ohio girl group Vanity Theft — a longing captured by the "come come take me away" refrain of the title track on Night Fruit's recently released Dark Horse 7-inch. But when it came to coming home, Boston beat out Ohio.

"A lot of the songs on the 7-inch are about wanting to leave Boston, but it's been great being back," says Dellevigne. "I feel like there's a lot happening all of a sudden. All of my friends are releasing records, there's a good scene going on."

Night Fruit's set last Tuesday (January 10) was a lot of fun, especially if you got a look at guitarist Jon Gill's rock-star poses and noticed that the cast on Dellevigne's left foot (from recent surgery) wasn't enough to slow her down. Though the tracks are lyrically bittersweet, the more upbeat indie pop was a departure from the darker shoegaze sound of their first EP, the digitally released Triangles.Dark Horse sounds lighter, but it came from a busy fall — recording, playing shows, planning a spring tour with 28 Degrees Taurus, and gearing up for a full-length, which might reflect yet another change in sound.

"We've been listening to a lot of '90s R&B, and we want to have way more synths and hip-hop beats," says Dellevigne. "We're trying to take it to the next level."
