Offensive but unfunny comedy

There's a scene early in Ruben Fleischer's offensive but unfunny comedy that sums up the whole movie. Nick (Jesse Eisenberg), a pizza delivery guy, rips off some adolescents — boys from the same demographic the movie is pitched to — promising them something fun and illicit and then just taking their money. You kids about to pay 10 bucks to see this, take that as a warning.

On the other hand, if you're looking for misogyny, racism, homophobia, and contempt for poor people disguised as humor, this movie is for you. Seeking seed money for their dream project — a tanning parlor/brothel — dumb and dumber pals Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson) kidnap Nick, strap a ticking bomb to him, and give him a few hours to come up with $100,000. Not unlike the bomb Eisenberg has strapped himself to, as he shows poor judgment in this follow-up role to his tour de force in the TheSocial Network.

In this wildly uneven comedy from Andy Flickman, sleek PR exec Marni (Kristen Bell) has finally buried her geeky high-school history.

Frustration and isolation are part of daily life for 27-year-old Tourette's sufferer Vincent (Florian David Fitz, who also wrote the screenplay), the sympathetic hero of this German road movie.
Review: Zookeeper
Local viewers might be amused by director Frank Coraci's Boston geography in this slapdash comedy; for example, taking a right turn on Queensberry onto Storrow Drive and then over the Zakim Bridge en route to the airport. Makes as much sense as the plot, I suppose.
Review: Crazy, Stupid Love
Despite a few hopeful moments, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa's glib romantic comedy settles into the same smarmy stereotypes: women are mothers or whores, or some variation thereof, and that's all men are interested in.

FWB is a well-crafted comedy of the sex-first, romance-later genre that — bonus! — isn't blatantly nonsensical.

Watching this litany of murder and debauchery in the gilded splendor of Saddam's Baghdad, in which Dominic Cooper plays both Saddam's psycho son Uday and the Iraqi good guy Latif, who was forced to serve as his double, I thought: this is like Scarface, but with a difference.

Samuel (Gilles Lellouche), a student nurse, gets sucked into a quagmire of murder and corruption when a thug kidnaps his pregnant wife, Nadia (Elena Anaya), to blackmail him into springing Hugo (Roschdy Zem), a wounded prisoner held by the police at the hospital where he works.
All's Well on Boston Common
I think of Measure for Measure , with its fanatically chaste heroine, and All's Well That Ends Well , with its lovely lass in pursuit of a lout, as Shakespeare's "Smart Women, Foolish Choices" plays.

As it turns out, according to Tate Taylor's adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestseller, the Jim Crow era was not due to centuries of institutionalized racism, but to Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her hang-up about "colored" servants going to the bathroom.

Following his star turn as a ruthless, if socially awkward, billionaire in David Fincher's The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg returns to the screen as a downtrodden pizza delivery boy-man in Ruben Fleischer's 30 Minutes or Less. Nick Swardson plays Eisenberg's tormentor.
Review: Cowboys & Aliens
As Dolarhyde, the cattle baron lording over the frontier town in Jon Favreau's pastiche of Western and sci-fi movies, Harrison Ford has the best lines. Like: "That's ridiculous!" — said when someone explains why Independence Day -like aliens are blasting the neighborhood.

Star Wars came out the year after Nicolas Roeg's enigmatic sci-fi film (re-released now in an uncut version), and after that no studio was likely to make anything similar again, nor would many audiences have the patience to watch it.

REVIEW: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES | August 04, 2011
As I watched Caesar (Andy Serkis), the übermonkey, and his primate minions break free of their human chains en route to conquering the world, I thought: 1) there are a lot of apes in San Francisco, 2) there aren't a lot of cops, and 3) this movie was better before the CGI took over.
