The failure to collect enough signatures for statewide offices has left the Grand Old Party in a more weakened condition than usual this election year. There are no Republican candidates running for the offices of secretary of state, treasurer and auditor. According to Brian McNiff, spokesman for Secretary of State William Galvin, there have never in recent years been so many empty spots on the Republican primary ballot for constitutional offices. "My suspicion is that it has not happened before," said McNiff.
