PHX Student Survival 101: 13 Bulletin Boards Around Town to Find a Show

You didn't hear it here, but not everything can be found on the Internet — peep the flyers tacked to the boards below to find everything from Allston basement shows to what bands are in town.That is, after you've scoured our music listings. (But we know you're already all over those.)

1. ALLSTON'S BULLETIN BOARDS (Model Cafe, Kelly's Roast Beef, Redneck's, Grasshopper)

If you're strolling the picturesque streets of Allston on any given day you're bound to stumble across a stray flyer or two blowing around with the rest of the trash. Or you could go straight to the source...any of these bulletin boards at these Rock City staples. more

2. HOOTENANY in Harvard Square's Garage

Situated inside the Garage, this alternative clothing store is a great place to pick up both info about a hot show and a new pair of kicks or hoodie to wear to it. more

3. 1369 and CLEAR CONSCIENCE CAFE coffee houses

If you can handle the crowds (shit gets bustling in here, particularly the early morning and weekend breakfasting crowds) you can usually find some good shows going down amidst the many and varied paper shout-outs here more

4. NEWBURY COMICS

Dodge the tourists, comic-geeks, and 14-year-old ruffians giggling over the naughty toys and gift gags here (or any of the other locations) and you should be able to find what you came for...a hot tip on a good show for the night more

5. THE BREWERY COMPLEX (Ula Cafe and the Milky Way)

Find out about--and sometimes see--shows at the JP complex, which includes both the Milky Way and Ulu Cafe more

6. IN YOUR EAR RECORDS

While record shops are shutting down faster than you can say illegal file-sharing, a few Boston gems remain. In Your Ear is one of them, and you can still count on the local institution for your show down-low needs. Damn the Man. more

7. BROOKLINE BOOKSMITH

You already know that the Booksmith has author appearances, readings, and other great events almost every night of the week. What you might not have known is that the little neighborhood book shop can also be a great source for what's up on the Boston music scene. more

8. BAGEL RISING

This locally-owned bagel hot-spot (seriously, they're delicious. New York- take note) is also a great spot to talk about the night's live music plans while chowing down on lox and cream cheese. more

9. THE OTHERSIDE CAFE

Bohemian cafe with great beers and food. The majority of the tattooed and/or bearded clientele and staff should be able to help you out with what's good around town. more

10. YOUR TAPED-UP NEIGHBORHOOD STREET POLE

Every 'hood as at least one. Go do some urban hiking and find yours.
