PHX Student Survival 101: Best Beer Snob Bars
Hey there, students of Boston. Now that the holidays are almost upon us, we figure you've been in town long enough to have gotten properly acquainted with some of the city's best watering holes. No? You've been too busy swilling 'Gansetts in someone's dorm room or basement to venture outside and check out the many and varied spots for ale-o-philes around town? Well, you'd better get to it, before the Siberian Hell we call winter in New England sends us all into self-imposed hibernation. Thus, our 2011 Student Guide's Top 10 Beer Snob Bars. You're welcome:
Deadly serious beer bar with top-notch shaker cocktails. more
The food at Lord Hobo is very good, but don't go if you don't love fresh, extreme draught beers, because the beer is the uniquely wonderful thing here. more
The excellent new beer bar near Kenmore Square in the underground space where the late, lamented punkrock diner Deli Haus used to be, sports a looong beer list (how about a Sinebrychoff Porter or a Leatherlips IPA?), a befuddling mural, and a monstrous burger. more
This stylish Irish pub and restaurant pulls a perfect pint and, with an eclectic menu of chic American dishes, offers a fair bit more than standard pub grub. more
Bohemian cafe with cheap West Coast sandwiches (on terrific breads) and fresh juices, including "a dose of wheatgrass juice." Not to mention a terrific selection of craft brews on tap. more
Named after the hard-drinking poet, Bukowski's extensive beer list, dubbed "120 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" requires a "Wheel of Indecision" for indecisive patrons. more
Both aesthetically and thematically a beer connoisseur's Shangri-la, this restaurant and bar offers 380 microbrews and exotic imports, with 112 varieties on tap. more
More than 150 brews, including artisan-crafted beers at the bar-within-a-bar known as Monks Cell. Some of the seats are wooden pews, so you can pray for a hangover-free morning. more
Regulars know that when it's way too crowded at the ever-popular Publick House, you can usually score a seat at its just-as-good sister establishment American Craft. The selling point is an extensive beer menu, with delicious (and many largely unheard of) brews on tap. more
