SUPER DUPER EXCLUSIVE: Mister Jason (of Porn Theatre Ushers) Returns Triumphantly. Album Release Saturday at Good Life.

Before I moved to Boston seven years ago, I knew more about the local rap scene than most outsiders, but my knowledge was still limited to cats who were making big splashes on the greater subterranean scene. No doubt that among that exalted group of exports were the Porn Theatre Ushers, an MC-producer duo that brought something entirely new and even different.

While most emerging underground acts at the time were flexing muscles, being the toughest conspiracy theorists they could be, PTU's Nabo Rawk was cracking jokes, and delivering riotous shows to match. Right behind Nabo, Mister Jason spun beats that were in some cases decidedly old school, and that in others were pushing indie hip-hop ahead.

I'll be plowing deeper into Boston rap history in a late-summer feature (more on that soon), but for now I'll just say I had a long rap with Jason about the Hub's late-90s fringe rap boom. While I had heard stories of Cage crashing on his couch, I never knew his crib played host to so many up-and-comers, or that he was one of the first dudes of his generation to really freak a sampler.

In the time since PTU's two releases, Jason's kept his face on the local scene, either in the crowd or, more recently, on the decks at Good Life. But unlike his forever comrade Nabo, who drops more discs than Kardashians drop panties, he hasn't released any music in more than half-a-decade. Until now...

This Saturday marks the arrival of Frankensteez (Fort Point Recordings), Jason's long-awaited solo outing featuring a range of icons from Edo G to DJ Revolution. Working largely with Moe Pope associate Rain and MC veteran K-No Supreme, he cut a magnificent spread that aligns old with new, and phenomenal dusty organic samples with, well, more phenomenal dusty samples.

Without further ado, the Boston Phoenix and JumpTheTurnStyle are excited to present “Black Angel,” the debut Frankensteez single featuring K-NO and DJ Saucy Lady. It's a finger-licking, finger-picking banger for the sticking, sure to survive multiple re-shuffles in iPods of even the ficklest rap geeks. Soak this in, and stay tuned for more joints including “Mister Jason Has A Posse,” on which dude tapped 26 MCs, whose names ascend in alphabetical order, to spit four bars each. Really – check the track list (from UGHH) below. To be continued...
