The Week in Geek, April 25-30: Birds, Batman, and Boson

"Submarine" (from The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade), featured in the IFFB film line-up

Welcome back, we hope you didn't forsake us after we took a week off! This week promises to be a doozy, packed with too many festival to fest at, and a lot of funny business.

MONDAY 4.25

[trivia] Boston Nerdnite @ Middlesex Lounge

Anticipating their first annual "Nerdtacular" night on May 6th, Boston Nerdnite opts for a Trivia Night this month.

[film] The Birds @ Coolidge Corner
Do the birds represent the intrusive and traumatic nature of "The Real" into our symbol-mediated reality? Who knows, really, but this trailer sure is hilarious. Showing at 7:30pm!

WEDNESDAY 4.27

[comedy] GeekWeek @ Improv Boston
Geek Week at Boston's Best Comedy returns again, after a ragingly successful nerdtastic shitshow last year, which Maddy Myers recapped here. Starts tonight at 730pm!

[film] Independent Film Festival Boston
A whole week of independent films, panels and parties -- recently voted the Best in town by you fine folks. If you don't have a pass, you need to get one and get yourself subjected to the most authoritarian medium around for 127 hours (just don't saw your own arm off, ‘cuz someone at Somerville Theatre's gotta clean that shit up). April 27-May 4.

THURSDAY 4.28

[film and author] The Town & Chuck Hogan @ Boston College
If the hubbub in my favorite barber shop was any indicator, Townies loved The Town. You can catch the movie, and bonus points if you see Chuck Hogan (author of the book the movie is based on) speak afterwards, starting at 7pm tonight as part of BC's arts festival. PLUS, he'll be returning tomorrow night for a panel discussion on Boston and crime stories.

[comedy and author] Demetri Martin @ Harvard Coop
This video will do more justice than my explanation.  7 pm, but get there early, because this is free and he's super popular.

[harry potter] Aeternitas 2011 @ Margate Resort, Laconia NH
Pretty soon, the Harry Potter universe will see its end, as the final movie comes out and fans will have nothing left to look forward to. But some people want to keep the magic alive. And that's what they'll be doing this weekend in NH.

FRIDAY 4.29

[science] Hunting the Higgs Boson @ MIT
Remember when science was telling us they might accidentally create a black hole somewhere in Europe? Did that remind anyone else of Half-Life? Scientists explain what the hell that was all about at MIT, at 5pm.

SATURDAY 4.30

[comics] Boston Comic Con @ Hynes Convention Center
COMIC BOOKS!! GRAPHIC NOVELS!! TOYS!! POSTERS!! SCIENCE FICTION COLLECTIBLES!!! Check the website out here.

[science] Cambridge Science Festival @ MIT and MOS

LOOK: at the 9-day schedule of events here (my picks: Camera Culture from 11-4, and Lightning! from 4-430, both on Saturday). READ: Our coverage last year. There's about a thousand other events including telescopes, robots, Project of Nim, spider silk demos, black holes, video games, and atmospheres.
