The Death of Dollhouse

Rumors have been flying for a while about this, and we did mention those ratings slipping -- but now it's final. Joss Whedon's sci-fi series Dollhouse has been cancelled.

At least Dollhouse won't have to go the way of Firefly, which got cancelled mid-season, leading Whedon to attempt to wrap up a plethora of loose ends in a film. Instead, Dollhouse will be permitted to finish up its season and clear up the characters' stories, which shouldn't prove to be too difficult considering that Joss has already painted a clear picture of where his futuristic brainwashing society is headed.

Whedon seems aware that his last few TV ventures haven't exactly gone the way of his first real claim to fame, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He's saying "internet ventures/binge drinking" are what's on tap next for him. We're all for the former (as long as the latter doesn't inspire it). Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Whedon's web-only featurette, was his best work since Firefly.

Sci-fi geekery belongs on the internet, we think, not on Fox Friday nights. So here's hoping Whedon will spring back and give us another sensation -- on the web, where it belongs. We'd love to see Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day, and Nathan Fillion in it - and we don't really care if that means a Dr. Horrible sequel, or something completely different with those same lovably nerdy stars.
