More Globe exits: Wilkinson, Krasner, Wertheimer

Yesterday I reported that Gail Caldwell, the Globe's Pulitzer-winning book critic, was taking the latest buyout offer and exiting the paper. But she's not the only big name leaving.

Mary Jane Wilkinson, the paper's managing editor/administration, is also departing Morrissey Boulevard. While Wilkinson's name will be less familiar than Caldwell's to most readers, the internal significance of her exit will be more profound, since--along with managing editor/news Caleb Solomon--she's one of editor Marty Baron's two top lieutenants.

"I'd been thinking for some time about early retirement, so when the buyout came along, it made sense for me to consider it," Wilkinson tells DQM. "...It was a very difficult decision. I've been here 26 years, and the Globe means a lot to me. But my husband's been retired for a number of years, and we'd like some time to travel and spend with our grandchildren. So I'll take the summer off, travel, and then decide what next steps I'd like to take in terms of professional activity."

Also among the roughly 25 buyout takers: healthcare reporter Jeffrey Krasner, who'll open his own consulting shop later this year, and education editor-turned-education reporter Linda K. Wertheimer, who plans to finish a memoir on grief and faith.
