LePage and backers: Out-of-state companies before Maine people

Over the weekend, Governor Paul LePage and some of his supporters made a couple of statements that make clear that "Maine people before politics" is a hollow slogan in the corporate-governor's rhetorical toolkit.

First, LePage unveiled an "Open For Business" sign at the Maine-New Hampshire border on I-95. Adrienne Bennett of the governor's office confirmed in an e-mail to the Portland Phoenix today that the sign unveiled was the exact sign presented to the governor on election night. The Bangor Daily News reported that the sign was made in Texas (see the caption for the second photo down).

Second, a couple of former LePage campaign staffers launched a website, MainePeopleBeforePolitics.com. The site is hosted in Utah.

Other recent tidbits: The gov has posted a uniformed state trooper outside his office in the State House - in addition to his full-time state police bodyguard contingent. Is it possible the uniform is there not for the governor's protection from the public (as some have alleged), but for the public's protection from the governor?

Also, the gov has decided he won't pay more into his pension fund, even as he asks most other state and municipal workers to do so. He's pleading poverty - that he's one of the lowest paid governors in the nation. Is he aware of where Maine stands for teacher compensation?
