A brief history of the end of the world, 2000-2011, in newspaper covers

If you're doing a double-take on the way past one of our red Boston Phoenix boxes this week, you're not alone -- Faraone amused himself for an hour this morning watching the whiplash at Forest Hills. You may have noticed that we took a different approach with this week's cover for our first (and last?) ever Rapture Issue. And lest anyone fret that we've decided to steal the Herald's typeface, we thought we'd clarify our inspiration for our tribute to the End Times.

To wit: this week's cover is an homage to one of my favorite magazine covers of all time -- the last 20th Century edition of the Weekly World News.
