In the worldwide renaissance of documentaries, you don't hear much about Russia, but it has a long tradition of nonfiction filmmaking that of late has shown a resurgence. Much credit is due to the Saint Petersburg Documentary Film Studio. Now celebrating its 80th anniversary, it has covered historic events ranging from the Nazi siege of Leningrad to the funeral of the poet Anna Akhmatova. The dedicated cinephiles of Balagan are marking the occasion by screening some of the studio's recent films, one of which, Alina Rudnitskaya's short Bitch Academy (2007), might be especially appropriate given the ongoing persecution in Moscow of the feminist activist group Pussy Riot. The screening takes place at the Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St, Cambridge | Tuesday, September 4 @ 8 pm | $10; $8 students, seniors | 617.876.6837 or balaganfilms.com.
