[awesome video alert] Kim Gordon talks about Pussy Riot, Putin, the war on women

When the Media Education Foundation in Northampton, Massachusetts, heard about Pussy Riot, they naturally turned to NoHo resident Kim Gordon of SONIC YOUTH -- who the jailed punk band cites as one of their influences -- to offer some commentary for their website Exploded View. In the resultant video (watch it below), Gordon speaks about the long-term influence of Pussy Riot on American perspective of Russian politics.

"It does bring to light their whole lack of judicial process," says Gordon, in the video. "I don't think people will look at Putin the same way. I think we've been in denial ... wanting to think, 'oh, they're capitalists now, so everything is more or less okay.' I hope people don't forget about this."

At the five-minute mark, the conversation broadens to discuss America's own current war on women and Washington's fear of female sexuality.

"Women make natural anarchists and revolutionaries because they've always been second-class citizens, having to claw their way out," Gordon says.

The video also includes clips of Pussy Riot, riot-grrrl shows, and Sonic Youth:
