[wednesday in cambridge] The Replacements + Archers of Loaf docs @ the Brattle
Heads up, folks: a fantastic double feature of music-related documentaries is playing at the Brattle this Wednesday. IFF Boston favorite Color Me Obsessed: A Film About THE REPLACEMENTS and the new ARCHERS OF LOAF doc, What Did You Expect, were both directed by a gent named Gordon Bechard, who will be there to officiate the screenings and to provide a Q&A after each film. I “Can’t Hardly Wait” to see them, and will guarantee you that you won’t leave “Unsatisfied.” /groaning
Color Me Obsessed was quite the hit on the festival circut last year, probably due to the fact that it seemed to come from a similar DIY place that the band itself embodied. Created without participation from any of the band members (a choice made by the filmmakers, not by circumstance), the focus is laid on the fans and their obsessions with the kings of Minneapolis indie. It’s a sweet little love letter to being in love with the kind of band that seems to drive its followers to the brink of affectionate madness, and it may even make you like Tommy “The Brat” Stinson by the end of it.
I kid, I kid.
Despite being from North Carolina, I’ve never had the chance to really appreciate the Archers of Loaf. It’s a shame, I know, but What Did You Expect has me incredibly excited for what may be a silly reason: it was shot at my favorite music venue in the South, the Chapel Hill/Carrboro-based Cat’s Cradle. The Cradle, at this point, has become a Southern indie rock institution (and I get really worried using that word, because the last “southern institution” we had was slavery), and it’s nice to see that the filmmakers took the care to capture them in a great environment. This is a document of their reunion tour, so I’m sure there must be a few hairy bits now and then, but overall it sounds like one hell of a watch.
And hey, if you don’t get a chance to head out there, take a walk down to the Kendall Square and see Jonathan Demme's latest doc about the Canadian rock legend, Neil Young Journeys (here’s Peter Keough’s review). All of these things are worth your time, and these local theaters, especially the Brattle, are incredibly worthy of your support.
See you out there!
