MP3 of the Week: The Pomps "Icepack!" // tonight @ Great Scott
Don’t call their ska sound a “revival,” and child, don’t you dare call them a super group. But if you did, then we suppose you wouldn’t be totally wrong. Made up of members of the Sterns, Void Union, and Have Nots, these zany POMPS hit the stage at Great Scott tonight for their first-ever headlining club gig, and the suddenly skanky Allston venue’s checkered dance floor will never have felt so appropriate. With infectious grooves that connect the enduring genre’s multiple waves while turbo-boosting it with elements of power-pop, standout track “Icepack!” is a rollicking melodic glider about the perils of drunken Saturday nights and jilted-lover donnybrooks. Their new record, Pomps Save The Queen, should be out by year’s end, a bursting blend of originals and ska-groovy covers by both Boyz II Men and the Stone Roses (Can I get a “I Am The Res-ska-rection?”). Dance hard with the Pomps tonight in Allston Ska City when they're joined by the Macrotones, Dead Ellington, Great Lakes, and the Snails, and DL the “Icepack!” mp3 – we encourage you to pick it up, pick it up, pick it up.
