Mp3 of the Week: Sun Sister "Sore Eyes" / Friday @ Deep Heaven Now

British blogs are buzzing over SUN SISTER, a new noise-pop quartet from Fitchburg, whose 4-track EP Rich White American Kidz is soon to be released by a small Sheffield, England, tape label, Tye Die Tapes. Though “Growing Your Hair Out” is the track of choice for most bloggers, “Sore Eyes” is the one we’ve been jamming on repeat for weeks. Like the rest of the EP, it’s a slow-moving lo-fi surf pop song with a sticky chorus and jangly guitars. The verse is super relatable: “One of my friends saw you last night/Said that you smiled, you looked alright,” sings frontwoman Stacy Baird. “But you were alone at the grocery store/Your hair was black and your eyes were sore.” There’s a sort of brat-punk angst to the vox, but it’s mostly all West Coast vibes. The band’s name couldn’t be more fitting, and releasing Rich White American Kidz last week couldn’t be more timely. Catch Sun Sister May 4 at P.A.’s Lounge in Somerville, as part of Deep Heaven Now V's Friday slate.
