Mp3 of the Day: Grand Resort "Night Is Dark"
Back in February we got all doe-eyed over GRAND RESORT, the breezy electronic pop solo project of a young man named Andres M. Pichardo, who was splitting time between attending classes at the New England Institute of Art and interning at Manhattan’s Flux recording and mixing facility.
A few days after we made his debut single “Microscopic” our Mp3 of the Week, he left his apartment in Brookline (he's originally from the Dominican Republic) and set up camp in Brooklyn, coming back to Boston a few days a week to finish up school. Pichardo graduated last Friday, and now he’s pretty much a full-time New Yorker. Hey, it happens.
Settling into Brooklyn rather nicely, Pichardo now interns at excellent indie label Captured Tracks, and in the meantime is readying a full-length Grand Resort record, Vanguard Dreams, set for release later this year. His new single, the sunny (yet somehow still a bit gloomy) “Night Is Dark,” was self-released today, and it furthers his developing sound of blissful, engaging lo-fo pop. We’re left up here in Boston wondering why the hell hasn’t anyone signed him yet?
Grand Resort made its live debut at Great Scott on March 2 on a Dreamhouse Collective / Boston Phoenix Presents bill alongside Young Adults, CreaturoS, and Chandeliers, and Pichardo and his full live band return to the scene of the Allston crime once again on May 25. Maybe by then, he’ll have a record deal. If you have a weird fear of downloading sweet jams off Soundcloud, here's the mp3:
