Boston Accents playlist 01.29.12: Magic Magic, Orca Orca, Sinnet, Hex Map, Floader, Jenn Vix, 3D Cosby, Slowdim, Trespasser

Feeling frisky and festive on this easy Sunday evening in late January, and tonight’s playlist is an eclectic mix of experimental weirdness and Boston beats. Got a bit bedroom-y pop-minded at the beginning, then it just turned into whatever. See you next Sunday for a Super Bowl edition of BOSTON ACCENTS – maybe we’ll only play Bostonians who have since moved to NYC to salute the battle between the Patriots and Giants. Or not.

MAGIC MAGIC “Sleepy Lion (French Horn Rebellion Remix)” – Band that gained some a buzz a few years ago – and opened for Passion Pit at the House of Blues – reunited this weekend at the Underground Summit at the Cambridge YWCA. Hopefully we’ll get a few more shows in 2012.

ORCA ORCA “Underground” – New jam from Allston’s Jimmy Hewitt, posted to Bandcamp last week. It’ll be included on the new limited edition Make Live six-track cassette out next month. They’re only making 100, so get on that.

GRAND RESORT “Microscopic” – Continuing the theme of bedroom pop projects, Andres Pichardo’s work here is super impressive and we expect great things from this talented 19-year-old from Brookline.

SINNET “Castlevania” – Aaron Spransy started Sinnet a few years ago in his frequent spare time during unemployment, but now boasts a full band, which will be on display Saturday at the Middle East when Sinnet releases Midwest Manners. Grab the track now or wait for it to be the Boston Phoenix Mp3 of the Week come Thursday.

HEX MAP “Living Fossil” – Kick Tuesday’s ass by hitting up the Middle East, where Hex Map – Mike Gintz and Nicholas Burgess; Clawjob, Clickers) headline a crazy weird rock bill with Providence’s Whorepaint, Immigrant, and…

FLOADER “Forvar Expand” – This Cambridge project, which we know little about other than “Forvar Expand” sounding pretty sweet. We’ll report back Wednesday morning if we get out to Central on Tuesday.

M.O.O.N. “Release (Wrong Island Remix)” – Stephen Gilarde just dropped a remix EP via Bandcamp, featuring aural assists from Dalton, Tim Richmond, and this pretty dope electro mix from Wrong Island.

JENN VIX & REEVES GABRELS “In The House of Dark Shadows” – Getting spooky with Providence dark electronic veteran Jenn Vix, who teamed up with Gabrels (David Bowie, Tin Machine, the Bentmen) and passed along the track to Boston Accents just last week.

TRESPASSER “Sludge Muffin” – Killer Wednesday show night in Allston: The Shills, Grass Is Green, SuperVolcano, and Trespasser releasing a new EP at Great Scott. It’s a GHouse production, so you know it’s all class.

SAND RECKONER “Morning Star” – Another entry in Boston’s blooming psych rock scene; I picked up their two-song demo at a gig with New Highway Hymnal and Quilt a few weeks ago in Allston.

EARTHQUAKE PARTY “Pretty Little Hand” – “Oh shit, I gotta fill two minutes and not any longer… ooh, Earthquake Party, hello loves.”

SLOWDIM “Don’t Cough Me Out” – Another gem from the brain, vision, and voice of Paul Sentz. Slowdim performs at You Won’t’s record release party Thursday, February 17 at TT The Bear’s Place in Cambridge. Last time Slowdim played there it was a fine evening of sounds with You Can Be A Wesley and Night Fruit.

MUSCLE MILK “I’m So Down” – Debuted this jam last week and dedicated it to Billy Cundiff after he missed a field goal in the AFC Title Game. Now we’re absorbing it on its own merit and it’s making us miss Luscious Jackson a bit.

SHEILA DIVINE “Carve Away” – Aaron Perrino and crew hit the Paradise this Saturday, February 4. Always a good time.

MEAN CREEK “Land of Hopes And Dreams” – Wishing a very happy 30th birthday to Mean Creek’s Chris Keene. Word on the street is that Tory Row put on WFNX and his table and others joined in in singing “Happy Birthday.” Oh the magic of radio!!

TRABANTS “The Matador” – The current Mp3 of the Week in the Phoenix, catch one of Trabants last area shows, before Eric Penna moves to Los Angeles, February 6 at Charlie’s Kitchen in Cambridge with CreaturoS.

3D COSBY “Paint By Numbers” – Brand new track – at least to us! – from this duo of Matt Ross and Daniel Harris, off next month’s Satan’s Secret record, which was mastered by Luke Sullivan (Left Hand Does, Night Fruit, Stereo Telescope, etc.)

LIFESTYLE “Turntable” – New Lifestyle joint we premiered a fortnight ago, kicking off a dance mix. Download it here, and see Lifestyle February 11 at Great Scott in Allston with Casey Desmond and Streight Angular.

YOUNG LONDON “Let Me Go” – Props to Matt and Sarah of Young London for seeing their debut record charting on Billboard the first week of its release. They’re also having a REMIX CONTEST: “Boston-based electro-pop duo YOUNG LONDON has partnered with their record label Fugitive Recordings and Indaba Music, the pioneering online music creation site, to launch a unique remix contest that allows users to download stems of the act's latest single, "Let Me Go,” and submit their own remix of the track. Indaba's international community of more than 600,000 musicians can then vote and comment on the remixes - but ultimately Matt and Sarah of YOUNG LONDON will choose the grand prize. The winning remix will receive a $1,000 cash prize as well as on official release of the track, amongst other things (see below for details).

The submission period ends February 23. For more information or to submit a mix, visit: www.indabamusic.com."

SHAREN WENDY ROBERTSON “We Dance” – Club jam from this Dartmouth singer who turned to music in 2008 to cope with the sudden death of her son, who was killed in a car accident. Robertson’s YouTube profile – featuring several videos and tributes to the late Carmelo Cacciatore Jr – recently passed 100,000 views. Respect.

SPF 5000 “White Hot Fantasy” – Keeping the beat alive with Amy Douglass and Sean Roberts of SPF5000, who have some hot shit cooking for 2012. Stay tuned…

TWIN BERLIN “Never Give Up” – Garage rock trio – which I used to manage back in the day, holla! – have a new record out, There Goes My Virtue, recorded in Los Angeles with Travis Barker of Blink 182. They kick off a Thursday residency at Hennessy’s in Faneuil Hall on February 2.

THE CRUSHING LOW “Carousel” – Sharp new sounds from the band’s new record Skyline Carousel.

AUTOCHROME “Senses” – Potential breakout band readying a massive record release party March 30 at TT The Bear’s in Cambridge alongside Night Fruit, Soccer Mom, and Young Adults. Sick fucking bill.

SOFT PYRAMIDS “Dwightsnake” – Indie blokes also playing that Sinnet EP release party this Saturday at the Mid East, expect new music from them in the coming months.

MOVERS & SHAKERS “The Same Old Games” – Speaking of the Mid Easy, M&S host their tour kickoff party there this Friday night. Good to see the boys bringing the spectacular National Harvester record to the nationwide masses.

BLACK LIGHT DINNER PARTY “Gold Chain” – Closing out a weird show tonight with Class of 2012’s BLDP, who return to the stage this March at Great Scott. Will they wear masks? Will we realize we’ve known who they are all alone? Will Daft Punk get pissed? Stay tuned.

xo Michael
