[awesome video alert] Quilt "Young Gold" + live @ Great Scott Thursday 01.12.12
Sweet mistress autumn, where have you gone? It’s kinda fucked how the selfish year-end holidays come along to seduce us away from the greatest season of the year, and by the time you’re frantically pulling up your pants the next morning you glance outside making sure your ride wasn't towed only to find a frigid snow dusting blanketing the ground in cold white evil.
We are truly a long ways away from another glorious New England fall, but don’t tell that to Boston psych-folk trio QUILT, who take us on a seductive trip through the dusty foliage fit for early November in their new video for “Young Gold.”
The Mexican Summer band has been getting airplay lately on Sirius XMU, and seems poised for great things in the upcoming year. Fun fact: When I was still at the Boston Herald, I included Quilt in my Ten Bands To Watch in 2009 column, a feature that I’ve carried over to the Phoenix the past two years.
Back in November when Quilt’s homonymous record dropped, Liz Pelly wrote in Cellars By Starlight that “Young Gold” was “a three-minute cinematic jam stitched with the band's signature swirling group vocals, temperate drumming, and a sophisticated patchwork of '60s-twangs and Eastern-inspired tones.” Now with visuals, those sounds seem to swell even larger.
Catch Quilt and all their autumnal shades this Thursday at Great Scott in Allstontowne, when they headline a fairly redonkulous bill alongside the New Highway Hymnal, Sand Reckoner, and CreaturoS, the new band from two of the dudes in Doomstar! And Joe Marrett from Ketman/Hallelujah The Hills. I mean hot damn that’s some show right there.
