MP3 of the Week: Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library + Cancer Killing Gemini "Amylee (Remix)"
The MICHAEL J. EPSTEIN MEMORIAL LIBRARY wants to re-think “Amylee.” The first track off last May’s Volume One record will, in 2012, experience a year-long process of perseveration: extensive remixing, Daytrotter Session re-recording, soundtracking a computer-animated video, and covers and reinterpretations by colleagues and band members.
The first step is the dance remix, and CANCER KILLING GEMINI lend a piercing electro-industrial spin on the original’s folky chamber-pop sound. CKG mastermind Eric Michael Cohen recruited his band and reworked the track with a spiky musical army of electronics: octave fuzz guitars, an old Juno 106 and Rhodes Mark I, four-piece drums, and vintage SVT bass tones.
Epstein describes the original as “allegedly the tale of an evil space-dolphin attack on Earth that is averted by the actions of a brave space shark,” so it’s only fitting that it gets the outta-space remix treatment. Grab the newborn “Amylee” MP3 below.
