[new dance craze!] Put That Shit On The List schools us on this J. Dash "WOP" situation
Being a (lazy) journalist can be fun sometimes, especially when you and your writer buddies get the same press releases at the same time on a slow news day. About a half hour ago, I was mad busy thinking about tonight's Devils/Bruins game at the Garden and wasting time listening to mid-'90s NYC art-punks Stiffs Inc. on Spotify when this message landed in my inbox: J. DASH's "WOP" IGNITES NEW DANCE CRAZE.
I slept all over it, because I'm too old to be falling for some publicist's New Dance Craze trick. I remember Freak Nasty's "Da Dip" from high school.
But Luke O'Neil, lead singer of post-millennial ever-wonder-about... pop culture blog PUT THAT SHIT ON THE LIST, jumped right into the fetid Pool of WOP, and we're very grateful he did -- it turns out this thing is totally a thing.
The song takes its name, I'm told, from the phrase "With Out Prejudice" which is confusing, because I just sort of assumed he was being racist against Italians, a philosophy I wholeheartedly support. It's actually that he's just racist against linguistics, because last I checked without was only one word, but then again I don't have my own dance craze, do I? Not unless you count fainting from built up rage a dance.
Now I feel almost as shitty as I did last night staring at all the naked teenagers on Lansdowne Street waiting in line to get into some day-glow party at the House of Blues. Not sure which feeling is worse, actually.
