MP3 of the Week: Orca Orca, "Change Of Pace"
Jim Hewitt's self-recorded 2010 EP, Imago Demos (under the temporary
moniker Young Minds), wasn't just a bedroom project. The Allston songwriter was
so uncomfortable singing in front of his roommates that he'd venture out to his
car in order to record his vocals in isolation. Recently, Hewitt re-emerged as ORCA ORCA, named for nothing
really beyond a casual affinity for killer whales. But what remains is his
sharp lo-fi songwriting acumen. On the stellar "Change of Pace," Hewitt
channels early-aughts indie-pop that glides carelessly through a sparking sky
of tween Tumblrs and lands somewhere in ansty dream-pop land. Hewitt plays all
the instruments in his recordings, but he'll have company on stage Sunday,
October 23, at O'Brien's in Allston, when Orca Orca make their live debut on an
eclectic bill with New York's Lights Resolve and Massachusetts rock co-eds
Trans Cardia.
