MP3 of the Week: Soccer Mom "(A) Natural History"

There’s 12 seconds of washed-out riffage in “(A) Natural History,” the new single from Boston alt-rock quartet SOCCER MOM, before it hits rock and roll overdrive and never looks back. The first track off debut EP You Are Not Going to Heaven, “(A)NH” has already dropped the jaws of early-’90s college rock revival enthusiasts, and co-vocalist William Scales' Thurston Moore impression fits perfectly over the sludgy, noisy, chain-link fence guitarwork. It just sounds like New England rock and roll for autumn. But the entire Soccer Mom 10-inch (100m Records), proves to be one of the best releases out of Boston so far this year, and it gets a proper release party treatment tomorrow night (September 23) at T.T. the Bear’s Place in Cambridge with the reunited Emergency Music (more on their timely return here), Marconi, and Autochrome.
