MP3 of the Week: Drummers "Planes II"

DRUMMERS are a power trio of actual drummers who abandoned their native instrument to don axes and keys, with the exception of Pretty & Nice guitarist Jeremy Mendicino, who serves as Drummers’ drummer. Got that? “Planes II,” which no doubt you’ll hear at Drummers’ Great Scott show tonight (June 9), is a post-rock fantasy that borrows as much dynamically from Slint as it does instrumentally from At the Drive-In. A jet-hangar whirlwind of guitar chords opens the song and quickly cedes to an ascending drumbeat that strides on the hi-hat and stalls on the snare before it devolves to the scattered patchwork of a jagged guitar riff. When the vocals hit, they’re sharp punctuations to the beat, desperate screams in the self-indulgent sense of pop-punk but totally badass in context of the surrounding tumult. It’s the type of headphone epic that causes me to stop what I’m doing and consider storming the nearest castle. Or Trader Joe’s. Whichever is closer. Grab the MP3 below.
