We already loved Dominique Young Unique before catching her in person. Her track "Show My Ass" was enough to land her on our 50 Bands 50 States list, and on our inventory of the hottest hip-hop acts to catch at SXSW. But holy tits were we in for a surprise at Spill last night, where Unique, despite being a booty shake catalyst from Tampa, headlined a bill of eclectic Canadian acts.
Diamond Rings was a hard act to follow - one-man-band John O. had the kind of crisp white uptowns, golden spandex, and inventive grooves that the kids go gaga over. But Miss Young Unique stepped in hard, with even tighter pants, a sweeter ass, and a wide-eyed energy that got me hollering - and I rarely do the call-and-response thing.
A few innocent first night fuck-ups aside, Dominique had one hell of a touch-down performance, as did those of us who got to ooh and ogle. The joint was busy, but not packed, as the music leg of SXSW doesn't really start until today - so I'm considering myself to be lucky. DYU definitely rode some serious buzz into this festival, but once videos like this start getting out, dudes will be lined up around the block to get into her next shows.
