OTD favorites Mary Timony, Carrie Brownstein, and Janet Weiss unite to form Wild Flag
As you may or may not know, we here at OtD have been following the post-Sleater-Kinney moves made by Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, and Corin Tucker. Weiss and Brownstein now have formed a new band, and it may be the most intriguing new project from anyone affiliated with Sleater-Kinney thus far as it involves another one of our favorites, Mary Timony of Helium (as documented in this vintage On the Download post from the blog's infancy). They're called Wild Flag (that's Rebecca Cole of the Minders in the lower righthand corner; as you may have gathered, she is the fourth Wild Flagster), and lest you think they exist only in theory as a Facebook page and a photoshopped image, they have already signed to Merge, begun recording an album, and booked some west coast tour dates. Nothing anywhere near here yet, and probably not for a while.
Brownstein and Timony previously released an album under the name Spells, so maybe those mp3s will be a preview of what Wild Flag will sound like. Or maybe not, since apparently they recorded that roughly ten years ago. Either way: this might already be one of our most-anticipated releases of 2011.
Corin Tucker, you'll recall, is scheduled to play the Paradise Rock Club later next month in support of her new band's debut.
