Break Up Boy? Fall Out Boy lose a self-amputated Stump

Stump goes solo

We're not sure exactly what provoked it (perhaps someone borrowed Pete Wentz's eyeliner without asking?), but it seems that the members of Fall Out Boy are on the outs. The four punk-poppers are currently embroiled in a furious Twitter feud -- an online battle the likes of which we haven't seen since Courtney Love challenged her own daughter to the Facebook equivalent of a schoolyard tussle this past December.

It all started last Thursday, when lead singer Patrick Stump announced via Twitter that he was no longer in Fall Out Boy. He added (as Spin reported on Wednesday), "Steven Tyler isn't in Aerosmith anymore, but his gravestone will probably say something about Aerosmith." (We'd like to see them try to fit the title of one of FOB's epically lengthy song titles onto a headstone -- "Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part to Save the Scene and Stop Going to Shows)," maybe?)

But Stump's bandmates, it seems, were not exactly on the same page. Commence a maelstrom of outraged (and hilarious) tweets from all four corners of the FOB camp ... not to mention the likes of John Mayer, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, and Mark Hoppus, who is doing his darnedest lately to let the world know he is back. (In case anyone hasn't heard, he's announced there will be a new, "weird" Blink album dropping sometime in 2011.)
Wentz, never keen to share the spotlight, promptly denied Stumps' claim, tweeting that the band is "in the same place it ever was" and that he (assumedly unlike Stump) is not a "negative person." Andy Hurley, drummer and generally overlooked Fall Out Boy member, was less combative, diplomatically tweeting that he loved the band and "it will always be fun for me." Not to be outdone, guitarist Joe Trohman added, simply, "I quit too."
Soon thereafter, the feud degenerated into a quagmire of Twittter updates, and not all of which made a whole lot of sense. Some of our favorites:
  1. The Joe
trohman @xsavedgex fine, i quit too. and i'm doing this to myself right now - live feed:
  2. John Mayer
johncmayer I am replacing Mark Hoppus in Fall Out Boy. RT @markhoppus For the record: as of right now, I am also quitting Fall Out Boy.
  3. John Mayer
johncmayer As defacto leader and bass player of Fall Out Boy, I am thrilled to announce Queensryche's Geoff Tate is our new singer.
  4. Mark Hoppus
markhoppus As of this moment, I am replacing John Mayer in the band "John Mayer."
  5. Pete Wentz
petewentz im messing around. though i am looking for a day job. maybe jersey shore x fob collabo. beat the beat?

For us, at this point, the question isn't "Will Fall Out Boy call it quits?" but rather "Wouldn't it be great if they just kept this up for a while longer?"

  1. Pete Wentz
