Converge team up with Cave-In on upcoming "Axe To Fall"

As far as we know, nothing was ever released from a one-off studio session many years back when CONVERGE teamed up with CAVE-IN for what was to have been a collaborative project, which back then was code-named VERGE-IN. (Say it fast.) It was a natural pairing, since Cave-In frontman Steve Brodsky had filled in as Converge's touring bassist for a stint way back in the day. Back in 2004, when the two bands were touring together, Brodsky described the Verge-In sessions this way: "It kinda sounds like this freaky mix of Ride the Lightning–era Metallica meets Mars Volta meets the Allman Brothers."

We're still trying to figure out what the hell that means. But for those of us who've been waiting a long time to hear what a Converge/Cave-In tag team would sound like, the wait is almost over. A taste of what might have been is coming on the new Converge album, Axe To Fall, due October 20 on Epitaph (with vinyl through Converge's own Deathwish imprint). Brodsky joins Cave-In drummer J.R. Connors and guitarist Adam McGrath (also of Clouds) on the Converge album track "Effigy" -- we've got a call in to find out whether this was one of the Verge-In songs or not, we'll update when we find out.

Over the last few records Converge have made a point of including some cool collabos -- like the cameo by Only Living Witness's Jonah Jenkins on No Heroes -- and the new one's no exception, with members of Genghis Tron and Neurosis pitching in, among others. The leadoff track, "Dark Horse," is streaming now at their MySpace page.

As previously reported, Converge will be on tour this fall with Mastodon, High On Fire, and cartoon black-metal gods Dethklok. We were joking the other day that since this show is scheduled to play the House of Blues, and all the other bands are essentially metal lifers, there could end up being more Doomriders fans than Converge fans at this gig. Are we wrong?
