oi vay!
the drama.
actually, we invented all of this to get more press. you know. conflict SELLS!!!
i'm going to put together a long blog about this one, have been reluctant to do that because of the sensitivity of the process. once the dust clears, i'll do it.
i grieve when the band comes off looking bickery in the press, it's just disheartening to everyone. brian, in his defense, never knew much detail about the original concepts (back when my original script was based on the book & grass's story - that's not in the show now) and how they were politely thrown in the trash before anyone (including him) saw them put on the stage. all brian saw (and is referring to in the article) was my 24-hour slapdash attempt about a week ago to try to unsuccessfully save a clunky and sinking ship long after my concepts had been dismissed, more or less, as too emotionally uncomfortable by the director.
this whole process has been a painful creative stillbirth and i think it's pretty hard for people on the outside of the process to understand the magnitude of the loss for me. but like some of y'all here have said: this is also typical bullshit that comes up when trying to create a project with 5 cooks (there have actually been 6 over the cours eo fhte year, not including brian who wasn't part of the writing/creative team). it's mayhem.
it was never supposed to be a dark, dismal, sobfest as the article sort of implies: it was supposed to be an interactive environment with lots of confusion, fun, prankery, audience participation and also darker images images about grass himself, the holocaust, guilt, the creation of art in terms of grappling with the past and how we, as humans, try to come to terms with emotions that are difficult to face.
anyway....it's not that. i'll stop now before i get ahead of myself and all verklempt.
the show itself, beyond all this gossip, looks good and will be a solid hour and a half of dolls songs & added bonus visuals, beautifully lit and well-directed theater and images, some of them very poignant and touching. i don't think anyone will walk out and i trust that you guys will enjoy it, even though it's gotten so far away from the original concept.....and i'm already trying to think of ways you guys will be able to help light up the space, even if it's small and subtle.
aaaaand we're STILL working on it, mind you...the script is not finished yet and i'm still not going down without a fight. it's a hard fight, it's a backwards fight, it's the learning experience of a lifetime, it'll be better than cats etc etc etc.
don't scalp your tickets.
