Protest planned against Gov's anti-tax message

Considering how RI is so deep in the hole, Governor Carcieri's expression of support for eliminating the state income tax seemed grounded in philosophical abstraction. Nonetheless, it was enough to stir his opponents.

Rhode Islanders to protest Governor for advocating the ultimate tax shift from rich onto the backs of working families

Who: Concerned Rhode Islanders, led by Ocean State Action
What: Protest of Governor's comments to eliminate income tax and increase tax on consumption
When: Thursday, October 30th, 8:00am to 8:30am
Where: Outside of State House, Smith Street side

PROVIDENCE - Dozens of concerned Rhode Islanders will protest Governor Carcieri tomorrow at 8am for his comments on the John DePetro show that he would "love to eliminate the income tax" and pay for government through more taxes on consumption. The protest, led by Ocean State Action, will highlight the impact of this proposal - namely, to further shift the payment of taxes down the income ladder to middle- and lower-income Rhode Islanders, who spend more of their income on consumption than do the wealthy.

The idea would also likely lead to major cuts to state aid to cities and towns, education, healthcare, job training, public safety and infrastructure needs, while driving up the already regressive property tax to fund schools and other city services.
