Progressives on parade

One of the leading progressive members of the RI House, and a progressive vying to join the same chamber, are having fundraisers this week.

First up, David Segal, whose "times" are a bit different from your father's Oldsmobile:

As you may know, I am running for re-election as District Two's State Representative, having just completed my first term.  (District Two includes Dowtown Providence, the Jewelry District, Fox Point, Wayland Sq, and the Red Bridge neighborhood of East Providence.)  I'm hoping to continue my work promoting better health care, renewable energy, fair taxation, increased school funding, civil rights, and more.  Appended below is a detailed letter about my work over the last two years.  And for even more on my record, please visit www.VoteSegal.com.

I'm running in a primary, with election day now just about one month away.  Scores of volunteers and I have been working hard for the last couple of months, knocking on doors, making phone calls, and stuffing envelopes.

But as we enter the home stretch, we need your help once again.

This Thursday, August 7th, from 6-9 pm, we'll be back a Nick-a-Nee's (75 South St, in the Jewelry District) for a fundraiser and meet-and-greet event, joined by two great bands -- the Low Anthem, and the Room Rumblers.  They'll be food and drink.  Guests are welcome to donate whatever they care to, or to just come and learn more about our campaign. It's also the last chance to register to vote in the primary.

Batting in the twospot is Chris Fierro, part of a crowded field in Woonsocket. From the Call:

Six candidates are vying for the House seat formerly held by State Sen. Roger Picard before his election to the late Roger R. Badeau’s Dist. 20 Senate seat. The House seat has been vacant since Picard’s victory in a special Senate election earlier this year. The candidates for House District 51 are Joseph D. Barroso, 57, of 224 Marshall Road, Christopher Fierro, 28, of 137 Ridge St., David Lahousse, 47, of 106 Ridge St., Bamby L. Mohamed, 47 of 394 Congress St.,  Robert D. Phillips,  51, of 425 Dunlap St., and Richard A. Picard, 61, of 734 Bound Road, brother of the senator. All are running as Democrats, according to [Secretary of State Ralph] Mollis.

From Fierro's invite:

For the past few years, Chris has been working as a policy researcher at the Carpenter's Union and has advocated at the State House for good paying jobs, accessible healthcare, and a fair budget that doesn't hurt working families, seniors, and children.  He will be a strong, dependable ally for working families at the State House once he gets elected.

We need your support to ensure that Chris wins the election in September.
