Kitchen Garden tours

Roger Doiron, of Scarborough, was instrumental in the long campaign to get Barack and Michelle Obama to break ground on a "Kitchen Garden" at the White House. His Kitchen Gardeners International organization, based in Maine, encourages people not just to plant gardens in their backyards or windowsills, but to think more about local, sustainable food sources. Last month, he traveled to the White House to present the President and First Lady with the 100,000+ signatures on the original White House Garden Petition -- an idea that proved so popular that it won a contest that challenged people to come up with the single most significant and symbolic move that President Obama could make on his first day in office.

As of this week, schoolchildren from Washington, DC, and surrounding areas can take tours of the White House Kitchen Garden -- which sits on the South Lawn, and houses a bee hive in addition to many types of produce. Right now, the tours are only open to local kids, but we hope they'll eventually be available for all of us who need a little organic inspiration.
