WHY THEM: Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk's drone-pop allows for a wonderful sense of displacement found in their clouds of atmospherics; we can listen to hours of the music, enjoy every second, and leave only with a subliminal imprint of melody. On Eek Shriek Beak, tracks sift between finding form and losing sense to the void. "Barn Tapes" takes just under four minutes to build layers of ambient noise, of hammers clanging in reverb-y rooms under the blanketed suggestion of vocals, only to have "3" charge in with a form-fitting pop melody reminiscent of early Radiohead B-sides. And somehow, through it all, the record remains streamlined, as if they mapped out the dips and dives, the ascent over the hills and through the fog, with the intention of a neat resolution at the end of the path.
