Santiago native Claudia Acuna has been working in New York (and therefore around the world) for years, but she has finally come up with a truly convincing portrait of her talent on the new En Esto Momento (Marsalis Music). It's a program sung mainly in Spanish, and its flow is sublime - perfect for both Saturday night and Sunday daybreak. Acuna knows jazz; she's an improviser able to wax earthy and refined simultaneously. But the tunes that populate the disc are from South American songwriters, both classic (Victor Jara) and obscure, and she stresses the melodies while assuring the arrangements allow room for her authoritative vocals.
