THE TWAIN SHALL MEET Ry Cooder and Ali Farka Toure opened a lot of doors when they worked together in the early ’90s. The California guitarist and Malian string player showed how a musical language can be shared, and similar connections have flourished since. One nice little disc that follows this thread is Africa to Appalachia (Factor), a collaboration between banjo player JAYME STONE and kora player MANSA SISSOKO. The trill of their strings sounds great, and with some help from fiddle and percussion, they’ve come up with a program that illuminates one particular trajectory of the African diaspora. Some sweet grooves await you when they take the stage at the Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad Street, Cumberland, at 8 pm | $14 | 401.725.9272 | riverfolk.org
