UPSTAIRS/DOWNSTAIRS

In a creative blend of yesterday and today, CARL OSTENDARP was offered the chance to investigate storage items from the permanent collection at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, 224 Benefit Street, Providence, in order to blend them with the mural installation that comprises his “Pulled Up” exhibit. Ostendarp is known for his declarative paintings “that respond to and take off from the history of late Modernist art,” with “biomorphic forms, words, or images, and flat color that merges Pop, Color Field, and Minimalism into a profoundly deadpan but witty language of its own,” according to his host. He came out of the East Side cellar with pieces by Odilon Redon, Jean Arp, Joan Miró,  Adolph Gottlieb, Barnett Newman, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, John Wesley, Ed Ruscha, and others. See how his show is affected by all the history. “Pulled Up” runs through August 23 | 401.454.6500 | risdmuseum.org
