NE-YO, IN MY OWN WORDS

Think Ne-Yo is bummed that his songwriting success of 2K5 (Mario’s “Let Me Love You”) got snubbed at the Grammys? Probably not. In fact, the Arkansas wordsmith is patiently waiting for next year’s awards ceremony. Ne-Yo’s “So Sick” was a runaway hit last quarter, and it pushed him center stage for his aptly titled debut,
In My Own Words
. The lead single captures the delicious irony of writing a love song about being tired of love songs; it also marks the end of the creativity flowing from Ne-Yo’s quill. He purrs “Baby I love making love in front of the mirror” in “Mirror” and then chants “Sexy love . . . keep me sprung” on “Sexy Love.” Despite his billing as a songwriter, Ne-Yo’s voice is the true main attraction, and on
In My Own Words
it quietly slides in with the likes of Omarion, B5, and Bobby Valentino. Perhaps we should consider a new genre for the bevy of highly libidinal soulmen with sugar on their lips. Ne-Yo Soul? Nah, too easy.

Ne-Yo: Because of You
If Ne-Yo wants to make a real mark, he’ll have to toss that hat.
The hate-love-hate cycle
The field is already packed with newcomers and veterans alike, all aiming to knock down my standards of good taste and respectability . . .
Big business
Now that the music biz has licked its wounds from a nasty 2005, things are finally starting to heat up, and an indie-heavy winter is giving way to a more major spring.
Voices carry
Stephen Malkmus never sounds like anyone other than Stephen Malkmus.
Out of the dark
Needham native Marissa Nadler got her start as a singer-songwriter.
WFNX upgrades
Let’s face it. There’s always an unpleasant macho subtext in intra-corporate rivalries.
If it ain’t broke . . .
For the past three years, the only real suspense in the local end of the Best Music Poll has been whether the Dresden Dolls or the Dropkick Murphys would win more categories.
Forward into the past!
Could it be just a coincidence that as I sit here writing this, a grizzled Bob Seger is gearing up for the release of Face the Promise , the Detroit rocker’s first proper studio album in, oh, forever and a day? The Lemonheads, "No Backbone" (mp3)
She really likes them!
Juliana Hatfield just compared herself with Bob Dylan. Juliana Hatfield and Frank Smith, "Beer and a Shot" (mp3)
Size matters
The Shins’ third album, Wincing the Night Away (Sub Pop), is as good as any rational mortal should expect an indie-pop album to be in the winter of 2007. The Shins, "Phantom Limb" (mp3)
The talk of the town
With the Boston Globe Jazz & Blues Festival defunct and no other significant local jazz fest in sight, the Beantown Jazz Festival has been stepping up to fill the void.
