Notes on the Submarines and two great local benefits

JOHN DRAGONETTI, the one-time leader of the A&M-signed band Jack Drag, and BLAKE HAZARD, a sweet-voiced singer-songwriter who arrived in town in the late ’90s singing in a project with Jason Hatfield, sure made for a cute couple when they left to join the growing ranks of LA’s Boston expats. It seems their extra-musical relationship hit a rough spot: their 2006 album as the SUBMARINES, Declare a New State! (Nettwerk), was recorded during a major break-up. But the duo are still a musical item, and they’re on the road supporting their second full-length, the bright, poppy, and unabashedly Beatle-esque Honeysuckle Weeks (Nettwerk). They’ll be back in Boston on Wednesday to headline upstairs at the Middle East on a good bill with the Champaign (Illinois) indie band HEADLIGHTS. . . . There are two worthwhile benefits coming up this week. First, this Friday, at 1486 Dorchester Avenue in Dorchester, right across from the Fields Corner Red Line T stop, HUMANWINE top a bill to support the Northeast Climate Conference and the RNC Legal Defense Fund, a group who will help anyone who winds up in jail while protesting this year’s Republican National Convention in Minneapolis/St. Paul. And next Thursday, the 29th, the RUDDS headline a show for the MSPCA’s “Natural Disaster Relief” efforts upstairs at the Middle East.
