There is stuff not to like about Internal Logic: a pair of instrumental interludes probably don't need to be there, and the drums aren't as gleefully chaotic as they were on 2010's Past Time. But that last record was mostly content to present Grass Widow's aesthetic— cooing, ethereal gang vocals, sinewy guitars, a general state of breeziness — as opposed to Internal Logic, where those things are part of far more memorable songs. Though the gorillas at the Franklin Park Zoo are too well-behaved to riot, "Milo Minute" clearly tested their civility when the San Francisco trio stopped by for an experimental performance at the zoo in 2011. "Spock on Muni" sports the kind of anthemic chorus usually heard on a punk song, as does "Goldilocks Zone," with its gentler-than-usual intonation of something that sounds like "Destroy!" but turns out to be "Just right!" Minus a star for some song-to-song uniformity. It's possible there's really only one Grass Widow song, and the band just keep trying to perfect it with each new version. There's also an outstanding possibility that the same could be said about most bands, and Grass Widow just don't feel the need to hide it.
